Development of the movement:

The Movement began in Guatemala in 1934 and the Association was officially formed in the following year. The Association received a plot of land following its service to the country during the revolution in 1944, and, due to the fundraising efforts of Movement members, a meeting house and swimming pool were constructed. In 1984, when the Association celebrated its 50th Anniversary, special efforts were made to increase membership. The government gave the Association the highest award in recognition of 50 years of service to the community, and the capital city honoured the Association with a gold medal diploma and ribbon.

Programme:

The programme is designed to reinforce basic values in girls, of all ages, giving special attention to community service and citizenship. Efforts are being made to increase membership throughout the country, especially now that Guatemala has entered a new era of peace, after 30 years of conflict.

Relationship to society:

The programme for girls from ages 10 to 18 includes social work in hospitals, asylums and children’s institutions. Recreational activities and help in the transportation of invalids to different national religious and civic celebrations, are arranged.
When a camp is organized, the girls always work in a special service on the site, for example – planting trees, painting walls and furniture. Special parties are also offered to the children of the community where the camp takes place.

Communication and Co-operation

The Association publishes a small magazine every two years called Faro Guía which includes information about the different activities and some special articles addressed to all girls for their integral education. This publication is sent to many Guide Associations outside the country and distributed in the different governmental and regional offices in Guatemala. The printing costs are all covered by advertisements.
The Association publishes a monthly bulletin named Hola Guías which includes several activities carried out by different Girl Guide groups.
Guatemala worked from 1994-1996 to participate in WAGGGS’ Peace Pack project, in conjunction with UNHCR. More than 3,000 of these were delivered to 20 communities comprised of refugees returning from settlement camps in Mexico for more than 15 years.

Training:

The Association’s training scheme, accredited by WAGGGS, is now being applied in accordance to the needs of the members. The Association also follows WAGGGS’ Policies and Guidelines.

Outdoor Activities

Groups in their yearly programme include a 2-3-day training camp. Once a year a national camp is organized during school vacations and this is for longer periods. Intermediates and Rangers also assist camps outside the country, mainly Central America, when one of these organizes a special regional event.

Development of the movement:

Guiding began in San Sebastián in 1929, and soon afterwards groups of Guides appeared elsewhere in the country, including Zaragoza, Valencia and
Madrid. Activities were organized and co-ordinated by the Asociación de las Guías de España.
In Catalonia Guiding started in 1932, the Germanor de Noies Guides developing along similar lines to the Asociación de las Guías de España. Guide companies were quickly formed, followed by Brownie packs and a Ranger section.
During the Civil War (1936-1939) all Guiding ceased in Spain and it was not until 1947 that activities were restarted. By 1955, Guiding had developed throughout the country and the Guides joined to form the Federación Guías de España. In 1962 the Federation was replaced by the Comité de Enlace del Guidismo en España/Comitè d’Enllaç del Guiatge a Espanya (CEGE).
From 1984 the CEGE was made up of two federations: the Federació Catalana d’Escoltisme i Guiatge, active in the Catalonian territory, and which had 7,000 members (90%); and the Federación Española de Guidismo, active in the rest of the Spaniard Estate, and which had 700 numbers (10%). The CEGE aims to maintain mutual aid and co-operation between its two federations.

Programme:

The programme used in Spain varies according to the characteristics of each component Association. Both federations have a mixed membership of boys and girls, and share the aim of promoting equal educational opportunities for both sexes.
In the Catalonian case, the whole Guiding movement is also Scout, and the programme reflects joint Guide-Scout objectives.
Some Associations base their activities on five fundamental points: adventure, team life, nature, development and commitment. They all encourage girls to serve those around them, to make a commitment to their own community, and to seek higher spiritual values.
One of the most important aims of CEGE is to develop Guiding in Spain according to the cultural affinities of members in different regions. At the CEGE Annual Assembly, representatives of both Federations evaluated the progress of Guiding in Spain, and revised the working names.

Relationship to society:

Guides in Spain are active in the field of community service. Some have worked with gypsies, helping a group of about 50 girls to become self-reliant, to work together with team spirit and to develop a sense of responsibility. Members have also helped people to settle in their new community when moving from one area of the country to another.

Communication and Co-operation

Brochures have been produced to explain and publicize the Movement. The component Associations publish magazines for their members including the bi-monthly magazine, Prisma, and the quarterly magazines Rastro and El Correu de Llúria 7; and thrice-yearly L’Eina, plus the fact sheet Escoltes Catalans, designed for parents.

Training:

Regular training meetings are organized at national level for Branch and Unit Leaders.

Outdoor and Environmental Activities

Members attend regular camps on varied themes such as leadership training and winter sports. Guides in Spain are involved in many environmental projects.
Escoltes Catalans started co-operating with the Third World in 1989, and have carried out projects in Africa, in coordination with African Associations. The Escoltes Catalans are part of COFRASL (French Conference of Lay Associations). At present, the Association continues its work for the environment, through its nature team, aged 16-25. Active work is also being carried out through the Fourth World team, helping with poverty bags in Barcelona.
